Program notes
Through the exploration of field recordings sampled from differing environments, ‘Senescence’ aims to explore aural textures through the juxtaposition between musical voices and those in the natural world. This work illustrates the similarities between humanity and its environment through both aural and visual stimuli, affirming that any separation felt, is crafted in the mind of man alone. ‘Senescence’ is a response to nature, utilising notated bird calls to drive the rhythm of the work and as a muse for melodic composition. The project explores the voice as an instrument through sound textures and vocal harmony, yet holds familial repetitions and phrases found within a standard musical composition. Through these techniques, ‘Senescence’ intends to evoke a response within the viewer and pay homage to the detail in the natural world, using art as a medium in which to do so.
