Love was Gone by Felicity Dowd (guitar, voice) with Olivia Jones (voice), Stephanie Gulevski (bass guitar)
Inspired by the sight of hundreds of cockatoos soaring above Bowen, Far North Queensland, Love was Gone explores the complexities of settling in love. This original song offers a heartfelt portrayal of love, loss, and the journey of ambition.
The Path Walked by Alexander Sabotkovski (acoustic guitar, voice)
This is a very personal and introspective piece about the appreciation of life as we grow older. It allows us to look back at our own lives, as well as look at life in the present moment and appreciate the time we have in this world.
Changing Tides by HIJAC: Helia Silva (voice), Isabella Sadler (voice), Jayden McCaughey (electric guitar), Atarah Johnson (piano, voice), Christopher Konstandaras (drums)
Changing Tides illustrates themes of growth and the inevitably of changes in life. The song begins with an upbeat, pop-jazzy vibe, creating an atmosphere of excitement. As the song progresses, it transitions into an emotional and raw expression of vulnerability and depth. Changing Tides captures the feeling of evolution and adaptability, displaying the ensemble’s unique ability to mix genres with heartfelt tone.
Mother by Xavier Do (guitar, stomp box, voice)
This is a song I wrote about my mum. Shout out to all the mums in the audience!
By Chance by Olivia Jones (voice) with Atarah Johnson (voice), Isabella Sadler (voice), Helia Silva (voice)
By Chance is a composition for four voices that draws influence from various determinate composition styles, particularly composition techniques developed by serial and minimalist composers. It is an exploration of overcoming indecision and creative blocks in musical composition by relinquishing control to predetermined musical parameters for pitch, rhythm, and lyrical content. The lyrics are a randomised list of some of the most common words in the English language.
You’re Gone And Now by Kye Hall (guitar, voice)
This song expresses my anecdotal experiences over the past few months following the end of a relationship. This project has been a great outlet for my emotions.
Inception by Atarah Johnson (piano, voice) with Jayden McCaughey (electric guitar), Alex Sabotkovski (acoustic guitar), Isabella Sadler (voice), Benjamin Tartak (saxophone)
“Inception” is the second track of my EP Healing which consists of three songs capturing the complex process of leaving the past and learning to let things go. “Inception” explores the stage involving a shift in mindset brought about by the realisation that the hold on the past needs to be released.
INTERVAL (15 mins)
An Elegy—In Memoriam by Sammy Wong (bass trombone, flute, soprano saxophone) with Hayden Koek (double bass), Christopher Konstandaras (violin), Elliot Molkentin (piano, tubular bells), Luka Odak-Flanagan (acoustic guitar), Isabella Sadler (flute), Benjamin Tartak (alto saxophone), Victor Justin Valdes (trumpet, marimba)
“An Elegy—In Memoriam” is the third movement of my major work The Battle of Midway. It is a reflection of the lives lost on both sides during this naval campaign. This movement is specially written to feature various members of the class who have come together to form the band for my composition.
Astray by Hayden Koek (electric guitar, voice) with Milly Garrett (acoustic guitar), Stephanie Gulevski (bass guitar), Sammy Wong (drums)
Astray explores the feeling of not quite knowing where you fit in life. It comments on the human experience of wandering through different paths, trying to find a place to belong, but always feeling a little lost. The VI-V-i cadence in A harmonic minor captures the uncertainty of this journey that we all undertake, while the key change to C major in the chorus offers moments of surprise and hope. Astray embraces the idea that it’s okay to be lost—it’s all part of the adventure of figuring out where, if anywhere, you truly belong.
Stargazer by Amanda Vega Carrera (voice) with Milly Garrett (electric guitar), Stephanie Gulevski (bass guitar), Atarah Johnson (synth, voice), Hayden Koek (drums)
Stargazer is a metaphor for those who you feel or felt most guided by. For me this song is a way to process my gratitude to my mum, dad and grandparents who have greatly encouraged and motivated me in my music.
A Blues Song About Nothing by Victor Justin Valdes (electric guitar, voice) with Hayden Koek (bass guitar), Elliot Molkentin (piano), Miguel Pinilla (drums), Sammy Wong (trumpet)
This is a blues song about nothing. Even though there seems to be nothing about it, there is a little bit of something. That something is about the mundane, waking up in the morning, making a cup of joe, going to a lecture, and putting myself right to bed.
Speak Up by Milly Garrett (acoustic guitar, voice) with Felicity Dowd (electric guitar), Stephanie Gulevski (bass guitar), Hayden Koek (drums)
Speak Up is a song about my journey of self-empowerment and resilience in the face of societal expectations and stereotypes. By sharing my experiences, I hope to encourage others to find their voices.
Rub Her Soul by Elliot Molkentin (piano, Launchkey, voice) with Victor Justin Valdes (electric guitar), Sammy Wong (bass guitar)
Rub Her Soul is a groovy pop tune straight from the mind of a dreamer. Bubbly chords and special lyrics—I wonder what they mean?
